In the 90s, I took an introductory sewing course at the Eastern Suburbs Community College, where I learned how to make my own skirts. I absolutely loved wearing my creations! But when I moved to Singapore, and without a sewing machine in tow, sewing sadly found its way into the "one day I'll get back to it" basket.
That all changed after I had my little one. Suddenly, the thought of making things for her sparked my interest in sewing again. But, as all mums of young children will understand, finding the time to sew—let alone take a course—seemed like an impossible dream. Then the pandemic hit, and with more time at home, I thought, “Now is the time to dust off that sewing box and finally fulfil my long-standing dream.”
For quite some time, I’d been on the hunt for an online sewing course. There are so many options out there, but none seemed to offer exactly what I was looking for. I firmly believe that learning the basics properly and in a structured way is so important. Just as I was about to give up, I stumbled across the Sew n Sew Sewing School, based in Melbourne. Not only do they offer real-life classes, but they also have a comprehensive online course that caught my eye.
One of the things that really sold me on this course is the fact that the fee includes absolutely everything you need to get started—yes, everything! From all the essential sewing tools and fabric to zippers, patterns, and even fabric for a skirt. The only thing I needed was a sewing machine, which I happily received just yesterday from Spotlight—a lovely lightweight Singer model. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate not having to hunt for materials before getting started. So, no excuses now—I'm ready!
The course is made up of 15 modules and includes full support from Christeen, the owner of Sew n Sew. There’s also a discussion group where we can share our fabulous creations and ask questions. Signing up was an absolute breeze, and within half an hour, I had my tracking number for the parcel of goodies. I’m really excited to dive in!
There are so many reasons I want to sew again. Shopping for clothes is always such a frustration; rarely do the pieces fit properly, and the cost of alterations adds up quickly. Frankly, I find the quality of what’s in the shops lacking compared to how things used to be. Living in Singapore, I also prefer lightweight cottons and simpler styles to combat the tropical heat. But more than anything, I want to sew for my daughter. My mother used to sew so many of my dresses when I was a child, and she’s kept quite a few of them, which my daughter now wears. I’m hoping to keep this lovely tradition alive.
Once my parcel from the Sew n Sew Sewing School arrives, I’ll be jumping straight in and can’t wait to share my progress with you all.
Exciting Update!
I’ve since had a lovely chat with Christeen from Sew n Sew, and she’s now offering the course to those living in Singapore and New Zealand—such wonderful news!
As for my progress, I’ve just completed module 4, and I’m already thoroughly enjoying the experience. The lessons are incredibly thorough and assume no prior knowledge, so you really can’t go wrong.
